Obituary of John A. Schubmehl
Wayland – John A. Schubmehl, 57 years of age, passed away early Wednesday morning October 5, 2016 at the Vincent House Comfort Care Healthcare facility surrounded by his loving family.
John was born July 30, 1959 in Wayland the son of Herman and Ann (Hargrave) Schubmehl. He was a graduate of Wayland Central School, class of 1977 and he completed his ceramic engineering degree at Alfred University in 2003. He has been a life resident of the Wayland area. John and Linda Schirmer were married June 1, 1985 at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland and together they have celebrated over 31 years of marriage. John’s employment for many years has been as the facility manager at Northern Lights Enterprise in Wellsville. He designed, built and maintained candle making equipment.
John’s hobbies were many as he was an active volunteer in many organizations. Throughout the years, he was a member of the Perkinsville Fire Department, a Cub Scout Leader and a 4H leader for over 17 years. While in 4H he was a livestock coach for the skill-a-thon and would take kids to the national tournament in Kentucky. Competitions were also in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He and his wife Linda were always there for the kids as chaperones, even sleeping in the pig barns many nights at the fairs and competitions! John was also very proud to be active in Wayland Youth Softball. He was a coach, board member and president for 15 years. During John’s tenure new dugouts and concession stands were built and the fields were rebuilt. He was also the treasurer for a couple years. His civic duty also included 15 years on the Town Board of Appeals, 11 of those years as chairman. Most recently he was a town board member for 4 years. John was also very proud of building his home from the ground up. He enjoyed hunting and especially loved drag racing and building cars. John will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
John was pre-deceased by his father Herman Schubmehl; and a brother, Steven Schubmehl. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Linda Schubmehl of Wayland; his children, Andrew Schubmehl (Katy Pfluke) of Wayland, Sean Schubmehl of Prince Edward Island, Canada and Denise Schubmehl of Long Island; his mother, Ann Schubmehl of Wayland; his siblings, David (MaryAnn) Schubmehl of Delmar, Tom (Cindy) Schubmehl of Pembroke, Peter (Kara) Schubmehl of Albany and MaryBeth (Rod) Renn of Saratoga, NY; along with many nieces, nephews and friends within the community.
John’s family and friends may call Friday from 4-8pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A family prayer service will take place at 9:15am Saturday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for John at 10am Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland. Committal prayers and interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland. Memorial contributions in John A. Schubmehl’s memory may be made to the Perkinsville Fire Dept., PO Box 152, Perkinsville, NY 14529 or to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.
