Obituary of Charles S. Mehlenbacher
Cohocton – Charles S. Mehlenbacher, 89 years of age, passed away peacefully Thursday morning January 26, 2017 at Elderwood Healthcare Facility in Hornell.
Charlie was born August 16, 1927 in Wayland the son of Edwin and Bernice (Loveland) Mehlenbacher. He grew up in the Loon Lake/Wayland areas and resided in Cohocton most of his life. Charlie and Wilma Zeh were married March 12, 1949 in Avoca and together celebrated over 49 years of marriage prior to Wilma passing away in October of 1998. Charlie’s employment career spanned a couple different areas. He worked as a potato farmer for Jake Boos for over 32 years. Subsequent to farming he was the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Cohocton for several years. As a child, Charlie worked at the Palace Dance Hall and Skating Rink. Those memories were invoked quite recently with him and his family.
Charlie’s hobbies were many as he enjoyed hunting, fishing and travelling to Long Island every year for a fishing trip. His passion however was the Town of Cohocton and volunteering for several organizations that benefited the town. The Cohocton Lions Club, Cohocton Fire Department and Fire Police, the CDC, the Cohocton Legion just to name a few. Whenever there was an event or help was needed he was there. Charlie was also a dedicated Republican being a very active member of the Republican Committee.
Above and beyond all that has been mentioned, Charlie loved his family and loved spending time with them. He will be dearly missed by all.
Charlie was pre-deceased by his parents, Edwin and Bernice Mehlenbacher; his wife, Wilma Mehlenbacher; his brother, Ralph, Alvie, Raymond, Erwin “Mike”, and Clinton Mehlenbacher; his brothers-in-law, Wilson, Ralph and Laverne Zeh; and his sisters-in-law, Linda Zeh and Doris Zeh. Charlie is survived by his daughters, Brenda (Jeff) Wise of Cohocton and Karen (Dan) Stone of Cohocton; his grandchildren, Shawn (Kristy) Wise of Attica, Zachery (Kathleen) Wise of Phelps, Samantha Uhl (Lee McIntyre) of Cohocton, Renee (Brad)Parks of Cohocton, Amanda Stone (David Crittenden) of Cohocton and Adam Stone of Cohocton; his great-grandchildren, Peyton, Hannah, Zeke, Jillian, Ethan, Lilly, Julia, Madailein and Wyatt; his sister, Alma (Don) Oas of Naples; his sisters-in-law Hazel Mehlenbacher, Laura Mehlenbacher and Rose Zeh; along with several nieces and nephews.
Charlie’s family and friends may call Sunday from 1-4pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Charlie’s funeral service will be Monday at 11am at the funeral home with the Reverend Virginia Mazzarella officiating. Memorial donations in Charles S. Mehlenbacher’s memory may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.
