Obituary of Jean M. Schwitzer
Wayland – Jean M. Schwitzer, 89 years of age passed away early Wednesday morning March 1, 2017 at Elderwood Healthcare Facility in Hornell.
Jean was born July 29, 1927 in Canisteo, the daughter of Lyman and Gladys (Scoonover) Savey. She grew up in Hornell and resided there for many years. In 1971, Jean moved to Wayland.
Jean and Richard “Jake” Schwitzer were married March 19th, 1966 in Avoca and together have celebrated over 50 years of marriage. Most everyone remembers Jean for her years of child care. Many children in the Wayland area were cared for by Jean while their parents worked. She also worked for Gunlocke for a few years. Jean’s hobbies were very important to her as well. She loved crocheting and visiting with her family and friends. Jean was also an active member of the Wayland United Methodist Church volunteering at many of their events.
Jean was pre-deceased by her parents, Lyman and Gladys Savey; her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Elaine Savey. She is survived by her husband, Richard “Jake” Schwitzer of Hornell; her children, Bonnie (Karl) Margison of Avoca, Brenda (John) Fox of S. Bristol, Bill (Lori) Fleishman of Bath, Betty (Mike) O'Dell of Wayland, Barb (Greg) Barton of Hammondsport and Stephen (Laura) Schwitzer of Wayland; 11 grandchildren, Randy (Connie) Azzi, Allen Azzi, Johnny Fox, Niki Fox, Shannon, Eric and Becca Fleishman, Danny Barton, Lita (Andrew) Brown, Kelsey (Jeremy) Smith, Stephen Schwitzer Jr.; one great-grandchild; her sister, Betty (Dave) Mayo of Florida and her brother, Donald (Liddy) Savey of Elmira; along with nieces and nephews.
Jean’s family and friends may call Saturday from 11-2pm at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Jean’s funeral service will be celebrated at 2:30pm at the Wayland United Methodist Church. Memorial donations in memory of Jean Schwitzer may be made to the Wayland Fire Department, 14 East Naples St., Wayland, NY 14572.
