Obituary of Betty J. Carney
Wayland / Colonial Beach, VA – Betty Jean Carney, 87 years of age, passed away Saturday April 15, 2017 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA; surrounded by loved ones.
Betty was born January 20, 1930 in Avoca, the daughter of Lauren and Beulah (VanHusen) Dunning. She grew up in Haskinsville and was a 1948 graduate of Avoca Central School. Betty and Richard “Dick” Carney were married June 24, 1950 and together have celebrated over 66 years of marriage. Betty and Dick resided in the Wayland area for the majority of their life together but also enjoyed the warmer weather and lived in Florida for almost twenty years prior to moving to Virginia over three years ago.
Betty’s employment career spanned several different areas as she worked in the medical office for Dr. Zone for several years, from which she took a position with Moore-Cottrell in Atlanta New York. From there, she gained employment at Bath National Bank for nineteen years, until her retirement in 1995. While at the bank, Betty worked as a receptionist, bank teller and loan processor. Her hobbies were many as she enjoyed bowling, knitting, putting puzzles together, painting, and she enjoyed cooking and baking. Betty had the best Christmas cookies ever!! She was an avid baseball fan with the New York Yankees being her favorite, however when she lived in Florida she adopted the Tampa Bay Rays and while in Virginia the Washington Nationals. Betty was a card player, especially canasta! She enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society in Florida and was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland, where she was active as a member of the choir and was the organist for years. She was a fun loving person that enjoyed life and will be missed by all her family and friends.
Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, Lauren and Beulah Dunning; and her brothers, DeMerle and Wilbur Dunning. She is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Julie) Carney of VA, Mark Carney of VA, Faith (David) Mastin of Springwater, Linda (Jeff) Sabo of Wayland, Mary (Al) Landino of VA; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her nephews, Wilbur “Bill” Dunning and Timothy Dunning; along with several brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews on the Carney side of their family which her husband Dick referred to as a “flock” of survivors.
Betty’s family and friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday July 15, 2017 at 10am at St. Joseph’s Church, 206 Fremont St., Wayland. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Betty J. Carney may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572.
