Obituary of Mary Ellen Smith

Dansville – Mary Ellen Smith, 77 years of age, passed away early Monday evening, September 20, 2021 at Noyes Memorial Hospital. Mary Ellen was born July 24, 1944 in Nunda the daughter of Norman and Margaret (Underwood) Didas. She grew up in Swain and Perkinsville and graduated from Wayland Central School with the class of 1961. Mary Ellen married the “love of her life” Robert E. “Bob” Smith of Dansville on August 29, 1964. Together they celebrated over 45 years of marriage prior to Bob passing away in February of 2010. Mary Ellen retired from Dansville Central School as a teacher’s aide. Mary Ellen loved going to the Casino! Any chance she could go she would! She enjoyed watching hummingbirds and was a very active member of St. Mary’s Parrish in Canaseraga; along with being a member of the Canaseraga Legion Women’s Auxiliary. However Mary Ellen’s true pride and joy was her family and spending time with her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren was what she enjoyed most! Mary Ellen was pre-deceased by her parents, Norman and Margaret Didas; her beloved husband, Robert E. Smith. She is survived by her son Robert Smith of Canaseraga and her daughter Tammy Anspach of Canaseraga; her grandchildren, Dustin Smith of Canaseraga, Bailey Anspach of Savannah, GA and Brooke Anspach of Canaseraga; her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Harmany, Malina, Jaycee and Kayden; her sister Beverly Cotter of Mt. Morris; her son-in-law, Jeff Anspach of Canaseraga; her Godson, Adam Fronk; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and many close friends. Mary Ellen’s family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday September 24, 2021 at 11am at St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery in Dansville.
