Obituary of Doris Z. Sick

Cohocton – Doris Z. Sick, 88 years of age, passed away Sunday afternoon, November 21, 2021 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. A true matriarch! Her world was about family, friends, her love of teaching and her community. Doris was born December 3, 1932 in Cohocton the daughter of Franklin and Erna (Neu) Zeh. She grew up in Cohocton and remained a life-long resident. Doris graduated from Cohocton Central School in 1950 and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Geneseo College in 1953. Upon graduation, she began her career in education as an elementary teacher at Cohocton Central, where she taught for 38 years. She taught first grade for the first 12 years and spent the remainder of her career primarily teaching fourth grade. She loved teaching and was beloved by her students. Doris and Leverne Sick were married August 22, 1953 and together celebrated nearly 40 years of marriage prior to Leverne passing away on Aug. 14, 1993. Doris’s hobbies were many. She loved to read, cook, bake, cross-stitch, knit and needle point. She especially loved her time with her grandchildren throughout the years. Doris had a strong sense of civic duty and pride for the Cohocton community. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church her entire life, participating in the choir and authoring the church newsletter, “The Church Mouse.” She was baptized, confirmed, married and now will be eulogized at St. Paul’s. Doris also enjoyed membership in the Cohocton Lioness (charter member), town council, Mapleview Cemetery Assoc., and the PTA. Doris was pre-deceased by her parents, Franklin Zeh and Erna Fairbrother; her step-father, Otto Fairbrother; her husband Leverne Sick; her daughter, Pamela Smith; her son, Gregory “Haney” Sick; and her brother and his wife, Rodney and Kathryn Zeh. She is survived by her children, Douglas (Mary Therese) Sick of Cohocton, Jeffrey (Letitia) DeVoesick of Fairport and Michele Sick of Victor; her daughter in law, Jody Sick of Cohocton; her twelve grandchildren, Bryan, Michael, Patrick, Mark, Miranda, Jenna, Shelby, Evelyn, Emmett, Aubrey, Juliet and Amelia; eight great-grandchildren; her brother and his wife, Clair and Shirley Fairbrother of Cohocton; along with several nieces and nephews. Doris’s family and friends may call Friday Nov. 26, 2021 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Her funeral service will be Saturday Nov. 27th at 11am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 97 Maple Ave., Cohocton. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at Mapleview Cemetery in Cohocton. Contributions in memory of Doris Z.
