Obituary of Jacob L. Weiand
Atlanta – Jacob Lawrence Weiand, 90 years of age, passed away late Sunday evening, August 27, 2023, at the Vincent House in Wayland.
Jacob (Jake) was born September 1, 1932, to Rudolph and Leona (Recktenwald) Weiand in Perkinsville, NY. He attended Sacred Heart, Wayland Central and Mechanic’s Schools. Jake served his country in the United States Army (2 years active, 5 years reserves). He was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland with the Nike Ajax unit.
After Jake’s military service, he headed to Alaska to work in the oil fields. En route, Jake stopped to see an Army buddy in Craig, CO. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Veronica who was working at the local Tastee Freez. He was affectionately known to the staff, as Veronica’s “strawberry shake”. They just celebrated 61 years of marriage!
Jake had a varied and adventurous work life. He was a farmer (Perkinsville, NY), an oil field worker (CO and WY), a ranch hand (Grizzly Ranch, CO), a mechanic (Wayland, NY) and finished his career working for the Town of Cohocton Highway Department (22 years).
Jake was a hardworking, devoted husband, father and friend. He was always there for those in need. He was a lifetime member of the Catholic church and member of the Atlanta American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and rebuilding his 1948 Chevy Thrift Master Truck.
Jacob is pre-deceased by his parents, Rudolph and Leona Weiand. He is survived by his wife, Veronica Weiand of Atlanta; his children, Katrina (Mark) Chapman of Eden, NY, Regina (Daniel) Clinton of Mt. Morris, Antoinette (Jim) Crittenden of Dalton and Jacob L. Weiand II of Cohocton; his daughter in law, Catherine Nickelsen of GA; his grandchildren, Daniel Clinton II, Madeleine Clinton, Sydney (Devan) Kovarik, Aidan Crittenden, Ethan Crittenden, Jacob Weiand III and Kyle Parry; his great granddaughter, Aria Clinton; along with many siblings, nieces and nephews on Veronica’s side of the family.
Calling hours for Jacob's family and friends are Saturday, September 2, 2023 at St. Januarius Church, 18 N. Main St., Naples from 11am-12pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12pm with a luncheon to follow in the church hall.
