Obituary of Thelma E. Shaver
Thelma E Shaver died peacefully on Friday Aug. 2, 2024, at Updykes Willow Ridge in Hornell NY. She has now rejoined her husband, 3 sons, and daughter.
Thelma was born on April 9, 1932, the daughter of James and Frances (Putnam) Price. She lived most of her life in the Wayland-Atlanta area. She was a graduate of Wayland Central School, class of 1950. On June 30, 1951, she and Norman J Shaver were married in Wayland, she at the age of 19 and he 18. Together they raised six children and celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to Norm’s passing in 2012.
Thelma was a hard-working woman. Every job she had involved manual labor. She was working at the Gunlocke Co at the time she got married. She picked berries and grapes for different growers in Naples. One summer, with the help of a neighbor teenager, they dug out a significant portion of the basement of her house with nothing more than a pick, shovel, and wheelbarrow. Thelma then returned to Gunlocke, and finished by working over 30 years at the 3M Co.
When Thelma’s sons were young, she was a cub scout leader. For over 30 years she was a member and held various offices of the Atlanta Rebekah lodge. She was an active member of the North Cohocton Methodist church volunteering for various sale and countless dinners. Thelma and Norm always enjoyed going to sporting events whether it was their children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. For several years prior to Norms passing, they enjoyed spending winters in Florida.
Besides her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her husband Norman, sons Brian, Jim, and Ted, and daughter Gail, and her brothers Lewis, Milton, and Art. She is survived by her sons Norman “Mike” Shaver (Triness) of Metairie LA and Barry Shaver (Keryn) of Wayland NY, and her sister in-law Mary Price of FL. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rob, Stephanie, Jeff, Jen, Barry, Royce, Christa and Lauren; step grandchildren Julie, Chistopher, Robin, and Jim; great grandchildren Korrine, Nikolai, Julia, Benjamin, and Timothy; also, several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her special friends Doris Councilman and Audrey Holmes.
The family would like to thank the entire staff, past and present, at Updykes Willow Ridge assisted living facility. Everyone provided the utmost care, comfort, and compassion for the nearly 7 years she resided there.
